Resources

A list of online resources I’ve found useful.

Computers

  • Microsoft Sysinternals tool suite: A collection of power tools for Windows. My personal highlights are Autoruns, lets you easily manage the processes that start up with your computer, and Process Explorer, which is like a higher-power version of the Task Manager that gives better visibility into resource usage and makes it easy to find the process linked with a certain displayed window.
  • System Requirements Lab / Can You Run It: A utility that looks at your computer’s hardware specs and tells you how well it should run a particular video game.
  • Liquid Rescale Library: Rescale images without distortion using the Seam Carving technique. Notably, links to the GIMP plugin so you can use it from an image editor.

Programming

Role-Playing

  • Donjon.bin.sh: A collection of tools and generators for a variety of setting genres and game systems. First place I go if I need help coming up with stuff.
  • Science Fiction Technology Terms (NASA): NASA’s guide to technology terms for use in science fiction (archived website, as it’s no longer available online)
  • Dave’s Mapper: A tool for assembling or generating grid maps out of tiles.
  • Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator: Randomly generates maps meant for fantasy settings. Lots of settings for generation and lots of options for display.

LARP

  • Larp2Go: A whole lot of links to web shops useful for kitting yourself out for LARP. Maintained by a good friend of mine.

Home Ownership

  • ABC Carpet Pro / Carpet Professor: Websites managed by Alan Fletcher, who has a lot of experience in the carpet industry, for the purpose of providing information on carpets to consumers. I highly recommend reading these sites before you start shopping for carpets; I saved a lot of money and ended up with carpets that I liked a lot better than I was about to get before coming across these sites.
